Formosa (2023)
“The composition’s subject is of my relationship to Formosa’s landscape; its history, its fauna, its flora and its magic. This is where my Germanic descendants emigrated to in the South of Brazil. The place is permeated with mystery, from its past, from its pious residents and from the land itself. Through the recordings I’ve made over the years I investigate notions of family, safety, emotional reciprocation with nature and what it means to belong.”
Through the Cracks (2021)
“Adam Matschulat uses his deft approach to musique concrete & electronic minimalism to carve a space of being: a sonic domain that comes to terms with entangled interior and exterior worlds. Both a meditation on time and upheaval, opening piece ‘Through the cracks’ begins with an overwhelming wall of opaque noise, before entering a wistful journey. Adam delicately renders his narrative in dream time, floating between ruminating keyboard motifs, tumbling aquatic sound worlds, the clatter of footsteps, the turning of a page, a tape player switching on and off.” – Takuroku / Cafe OTO
Originally from Brazil, Matschulat studied drama in São Paulo before moving to London to study audio production. His final thesis was mentored by Erik Nyström, a PhD student of Denis Smalley, and resulted in a 40-minute electroacoustic piece and dance performance. Drawing on his background in physical theatre, his early performance work focused on the exploration between movement and noise.
His recent work was presented at the UNESCO Week of Sound (University of Edinburgh, 2025) and Encontres Electroacústics (Fundació ACA, 2024). Other presentations include the Mapa del Ruido Festival (Espacio Pulpo, 2024). He has received the Sound and Music Essentials Fund (2024) and held residencies at Fundació ACA (2024) and Snape Maltings through the Britten Pears Arts Foundation (2023). Supported by Arts Council DYCP funding, he attended the Dartington Music Summer School to develop his compositional practice. In 2022/2023, Edinburgh University commissioned him to compose an electroacoustic piece for Energies not Forms not Figures. This project, centered on dark matter observation, was a collaboration with the late researcher Dr. Rebecca Collins and the science department at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
His work has had international radio play on radio shows including BBC Radio 3 Late Junction, NTS, Resonance Extra, Ars Sonora & La casa del Sonido on Radio Nacional Clasica in Spain, LYL Radio in Switzerland, FADE radio in Athens, and others.
